Olympus OM-D E-M5 Mark III is Finally Here!

Olympus has announced its latest OM-D mirrorless camera, an impressive update to its compact and versatile OM-D E-M5 Mark II and, not surprisingly, it is named the Olympus OM-D E-M5 Mark III Mirrorless Micro Four Thirds Digital Camera.

We’re not exactly short of small, powerful mirrorless cameras for travel and vlogging, but despite arriving later than the Fujifilm X-T30 and Sony A640o, the OM-D E-M5 Mark III manages to carve out a unique niche for itself. It’s the only camera of this size to combine in-body image stabilisation, an articulated screen and weather-sealing, making it a very promising all-rounder.

Compact, Lightweight Overall System

The E-M5 Mark III continues the series’ retro looks, but makes a few welcome tweaks to the formula. It’s lighter than its predecessor, thanks to a new body material and smaller battery, though the latter still serves up around 310 shots per charge (about par for a camera of this size). The E-M5 Mark III is similar in size and weight to the Fujifilm X-T30, while managing to pack in both IBIS and weather-sealing.

This model can easily be carried on trips even when paired with a large-diameter standard zoom lens. The compact system size means that users can shoot for long periods of time in locations where tripods cannot be used, reducing fatigue so photo opportunities are not missed. Olympus also offers a diverse lineup of high-resolution, compact, lightweight interchangeable lenses.

High Quality Images

Just as on the E-M1 Mark II, this model boasts a combination of the approximate 20.4 Megapixel Live MOS sensor, the latest high-speed TruePic VIII image processor, and powerful image stabilization. When paired with high-resolution M.Zuiko Digital lenses, it is capable of capturing images with minimal noise even at high-sensitivity settings, and delivers high image quality with minimal distortion up to the edges of the shot.

121 AF Points for Greater Focusing Freedom

The new E-M5 Mark III upgrades its focusing system from 81-points to a Dual F.A.S.T. AF 121-point on-chip system. This Contrast and Phase detection system features all cross-type focus points for faster and more accurate autofocus. Unlike DSLR cameras, there is no degradation in AF precision when using a fast lens. The E-M5 Mark III offers high-precision, high-speed focusing from the maximum aperture setting of all M.Zuiko Digital lenses regardless of subject patterns. The algorithm has also been improved over previous models, preventing the focus from unexpected jumping to the background, even in mixed perspective scenes with near and far subjects.

Up to 10 fps high-speed sequential shooting in AF/AE tracking

The camera enables 10 fps sequential shooting with its mechanical shutter, including AF/AE tracking, and 30 fps with its silent electronic shutter, all resulting in high image quality. When it comes to capturing subjects with intense movements, it can go upto 10 fps high-speed sequential shooting in AF/AE tracking. The moving subject tracking algorithm uses the AF information from both Live View images and recorded images to enable quick tracking of unpredictable subject movement and changes in subject speed.

In-body 5-axis Image Stabilization (IS)

One of the things that makes this camera stand out from the others in its league is the 5-axis in-body image stabilization. Based on camera shake information obtained from the high-sensitivity gyro sensor and image analysis, the TruePic VIII image processor precisely controls the IS unit to enable up to 5.5 shutter speed steps of compensation performance. In addition to angular and shift blur, roll blur, which cannot be compensated for by in-lens image stabilization only, is corrected for powerful handheld shooting support.

Versatile shooting features unique to Olympus

A few additional features of this new camera make it quite an interesting device, including the 50MP Tripod Hi-Res function for incredibly detailed imaging, Pro Capture function, focus bracketing, and focus stacking. Simplified multiple exposure mode is available and custom modes allow the user to set functions quickly to exact settings. Finally, the camera is Wi-Fi compatible with Bluetooth Version 4.2 BLE for quick sharing.

Cinema 4K Video with OM-D Movie

With this camera, users can record 4K 30P high-definition video with minimal camera shake owing to the 5-axis IS coupled with electronic stabilization. No special stabilization equipment is required, even when moving around actively. Optimal focusing can be achieved using the Information from the On-chip Phase Detection AF sensor.

Large, High-Visibility Viewfinder

The E-M5 Mark III features a 2.36 million-dot, high-contrast OLED panel for vivid colors and an EVF (electronic viewfinder) system for minimal distortion up to the edges of the screen. The design makes the framing more accurate so the user can concentrate on shooting. The long eyepoint also makes it easy to check the overall framing even when wearing glasses.

Price The OM-D E-M5 Mark III will cost ₹84,987.88 (body only) when it becomes available in mid-November in both silver and black versions. Naturally, you’ll also be able to buy it with different lenses too. The prices may seem a bit higher than your average mid-range mirrorless camera, with the Fujifilm X-T30 (which has a larger APS-C sensor) costing Rs. 74,999 for the body only, and Panasonic G90 available for Rs. 82,802.

But the former doesn’t have in-body image stabilisation and the OM-D E-M5 Mark III matches the G90’s all-rounder feature list, which includes weather-sealing, a new OLED EVF and an articulating screen that’s particularly handy for video. It’s also worth bearing in mind that Micro Four Thirds system offers the biggest range of lenses around, so there are some great budget options from the likes of Sigma, Samyang and Panasonic, as well as Olympus itself.
